Fights between women prisoners in the kitchen at Aligarh jail has led the authorities to have the men cook instead, reports a leading daily. This was the solution that the jail staff came up with to reduce the squabbles.

According to the report, the prison had separate kitchens for men and women two years ago. The women's kitchen was shut down because of the escalating fights. Since then the women were allowed to cook meals in the kitchen only for festivals such Navratri and Ramzan.

The officer in charge of the women's wing of the jail told the daily that the fights occurred over quality of food, the order in which it is served and instances like taking too long and using up burner on the stove. One of the biggest reasons for the fight is caste, she said, as there would be fights over person from another caste touching a vessel.

The jail has 100 inmates cook for the rest of the 3000. Since the male inmates have taken over the cooking duties, the fights have reportedly declined.
