Noted filmmaker Anand Patwardhan on Wednesday returned his National Award to protest against the murders of rationalist author MM Kalburgi and activist Govind Pansare.

Here are a few award winning films from the prolific director:
1. Bombay our city (1985, 75 minutes): This film tells the story of millions of slum dwellers of Mumbai and the issues they face, which include threats of eviction to 'beautify' the city.
Patwardhan got a National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film in 1986. He returned this award to protest against a 'culture of intolerance.'
2. 'In the Name of God' (Ram ke Nam), (1992, 75 minutes): This film tracks the Hindutva movement before the demolishing of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya. It won the National Film Award for Best Investigative Film in 1992.
3. Father, Son and Holy War (Pitra, Putra aur Dharmayuddha) (1995, 120 minutes)
This film received the National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues and National Film Award for Best Investigative Film in 1996.
4. War and Peace (2002):
With the nations like India, Pakistan and United States vying to have gather arms, especially nuclear weapons, this film examines the affect it has on people, relations between nations and peace movements. It won the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film, India, 2004,[26] etc.
5. Jai Bhim Comrade (2011): This film, made over the span of 14 years, tracks the Dalit movement, the artists leading it and the various incidents of violence that took place against the community.
