Research conducted by a private hospital to find out sources of stress and responses to stress in executives threw up alarming results. Up to 2,000 persons between the age of 30 and 45 years were included in the survey, of which 1,400 were males and 600 were females.

Upto 19 per cent of the respondents said that long working hours causes stress. Another 16 per cent said that pressure of work while 13 per cent blamed it on no work-life balance. 12 per cent said that stress was caused by the fact that there was no role clarity in their work place. 12 per cent blamed it on personal relationship conflicts while 11 per cent blame it on professional conflicts.

"Generally, if you go and tell anyone that he or she is suffering from stress and need counseling the first reaction is that—I don't need a counsel to listen me. They will agree that they are satisfied with their personal and professional life balance. But when you make them understand that there is need and they should listen to their mind calling, there are chances of improvement," said Dr Bhawna Barmi, Senior Clinical Psychologist, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute. "We've known for several years that diet and exercise can help people maintain their physical health and live longer, but maintaining mental health is just as important. Lifestyle changes are a process that take time and require support. Careful planning means setting small goals and taking things one step at a time."

Dr Barmi said, "In order to avoid stress, make a plan that will stick. Detail the time of day when you can take walks and how long you'll walk. Write everything down, and ask yourself if you're confident that these activities and goals are realistic for you. If not, start with smaller steps."

She further adds, "Asking for help doesn't mean a lifetime of therapy; even just a few sessions can help you examine and set attainable goals or address the emotional issues that may be getting in your way."
