Sonu Nigam's alleged controversial views on the Azaan has been the hottest topic in the nation in the past couple of weeks. The singer posted on Twitter that he was against the morning Azaan playing on the loudspeakers and later tried to support his words by talking similarly about Hindu and Sikh practises too at places of worship.
Nigam's words got him immense backlash nationwide and while he does have the right to say whatever he wants to in a free country like India, as a responsible citizen, he needs to make sure not to hurt the sentiments of others while doing so. Which is why some people turned to this older video of Priyanka Chopra which is now going viral in light of the entire issue.
While Nigam was critical of the Azaan playing loudly around him, Chopra admitted it to be one of her favourite things to listen to. Back in 2015, while shooting for Jai Gangaajal in Bhopal, at a press conference, the actress was asked what her favourite thing about the city was. The actress responded by saying that it was the Azaan that would play in the evenings, that would be something she would wait for. When her shoot would end, she would sit on the balcony in the evenings around 8 and listen to the Azaan playing around her, with the voices coming from at least 6 Masjids nearby. "The sun is setting and the Azaan plays on the microphone, and it's a very strange kind of peace" was what she had said back then.
Chopra's video started making the rounds on the internet post Nigam's comments. Nigam has already gone bald after a Maulvi issued a fatwa against him, saying that whoever could shave his head would get 10 lakhs. In response, Nigam himself called up a press conference and asked the Maulvi to be present himself and got his head shaved, in order to show that he was not opposed to other religions.
