Twilight saga will return with five short films exclusively on Facebook, it has been reported. Twilight author Stephenie Meyer and Lions Gate have announced plans to select five aspiring female directors to make short films based on the vampire romance saga that they will release on Facebook next year.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, as part of the initiative by Lionsgate, author Stephenie Meyer and Women in Film, called "The Storytellers, New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga," a "multiphase contest" would be held, to select at least five female filmmakers to helm the new short films.

Dan Rose, Facebook vice president of partnerships, stated that this was a great opportunity to engage Twilight's massive global audience on Facebook through an innovative premium video program.

Participating in the selection and mentorship of the filmmakers would be a group of panelists including Meyer, Kristen Stewart, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Frozen writer Jennifer Lee, director Catherine Hardwicke, Modern Family's Julie Bowen and the president of Women In Film, Cathy Schulman.

"We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of 'Twilight' to a whole new audience while re-energizing existing fans," Michael Burns, Lions Gate's vice chairman told the New York Times.

"This is the just the beginning, a template, if you will. You can probably guess what might be coming next." Meyer indicated that the project was a way to bridge the gender gap in the industry. "The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I've worked in the film industry," she said.
