Since franchise sports leagues began in India with the Indian Premier League 16 years ago, celebrities have been at the forefront of owning sports franchise. Whether it is Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, or Shilpa Shetty in the IPL or Abhishek Bachchan in the PKL (Pro Kabaddi League), actors have always invested in these multicrore franchises. But there is one name that transcends several sports, owning not one or two but four teams in different sports.

The Indian superstar who owns four teams in different sports

Telugu superstar Nagarjuna is one of the richest actors in India, a position he has reached through the success of his films, hosting Bigg Boss Telugu, and some savvy business decisions. Among these decisions are investments in various sports teams. In 2012, Nagarjuna partnered cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni to own the Mahi Racing Team India, which competes in the FIM Supersport World Championship, a superbike racing platform. The following year, Nagarjuna became a co-owner of the Mumbai Masters franchise of the Indian Badminton League. His co-owner here was another Indian cricket legend – Sunil Gavaskar.

The actor has also been an investor in the Telugu Warriors team in the Celebrity Cricket League, an exhibition cricket tournament where teams comprise of actors from across India. In 2017, Nagarjuna expanded his sports portfolio to the world’s most popular sport – football. A consortium led by him, fellow Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi, and Sachin Tendulkar bought the Kerala Blasters team in the Indian Super League.

Other celeb owners of Indian sports franchises

Shah Rukh Khan is one of the most prominent owners of cricket teams from India. To be fair, the actor also owns four teams but under the same franchise in the same sport. His Knight Riders franchise has teams in Kolkata, Trinidad, Cape Town, and Los Angeles, all playing in the regiona.l T20 leagues in their area. In addition, Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty are among the co-owners of IPL teams Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals respectively. Abhishek Bachchan owns PKL’s Jaipur Pink Panthers franchise, while Ranbir Kapoor has a stake in ISL’s Mumbai City franchise. A number of other actors have recently bought teams in the upcoming Indian Street Premier League.
