The 2016 Oscar nominations have been at the centre of the conversation on diversity in Hollywood. The lack of any people of colour in the four acting categories had the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag trending again this year. With Chris Rock hosting the show, racial diversity will inevitably be the theme of the night in a room full of mostly white people.
But the nominations being what they are, we're looking at who has the best chance of taking an Oscar home.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's The Revenant is leading the list with 12 nominations, including best picture, best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and best director for Inarritu. Inarritu won the Director's Guild Award for the second time in a row, giving high probability to another win this year for best director.
The Revenant is competing with gritty action adventure Mad Max: Fury Road and space film The Martian. All three boast budgets above $100 million. The best picture nominees also include independent films Room, Spotlight and Brooklyn as well as studio productions The Big Short and Bridge of Spies, which had budgets in the $20 million to $40 million range.
Among the actors, Leonardo DiCaprio probably already has his best actor speech ready, while Brie Larson is the favourite to win best actress after sweeping most of the awards prior to the Oscars.
