At the end of the Koffee With Karan featuring Arjun Kapoor and Varun Dhawan, one wasn’t sure they are the friends that they declared themselves to be. They fought, pulled each other down and behaved more like two competitive actresses rather than two buddies. Arjun even called Varun a snake and likened him to Amrish Puri’s character Ajgar Jurrat in Vishawtma.

These two boys are ferociously and blissfully filmy. They can tell you things about our movies that you won’t find anywhere on Google. We even saw Varun and Arjun in a basement film directed by Varun when the two were just kids.

Host Karan Johar was no help either. He constantly ribbed the two stars into aggression, going as far as to ask who was bigger. And we don’t think he meant their shoe size or their stardom.

What came across was a kinship and a camaraderie that was underlined by a pronounced sense of one-upmanship. Varun definitely appeared more competitive. He looked genuinely upset when he lost the hamper to Arjun during the ‘Rapidfire’.

Both Arjun and Varun refused to discuss the women they’ve dated, though finally Varun did admit that he was very happy with the person in his life for many years. He also admitted he would kill Ranveer Singh because he’s doing so well for himself.

Was it all a joke? Or was there an element of disturbing competitiveness in Varun’s attitude? We scarcely got a chance to evaluate the subtexts. Not when Karan Johar is asking his guests to plunge into tantalizing trivia.

There was a section where Varun Dhawan had to enact a boy who had just come out of the closet hitting on a gay man, played by Arjun Kapoor, in a bar. Koffee With Karan this season has turned bolder, more sexual in tone and salacious in intent.

Questions  for actors include such gems of intrusive voyeurism as "Have you ever slept with any of your friends’ girlfriends?" This comes next week when Ranbir Kapoor answers in the affirmative.

“I hope it wasn’t one of mine,” comes Arjun Kapoor quip. The age of innocence is over.
