Despite the torrential rainfall all across the city, collections on day one in Mumbai were relatively high for Varun Dhawan-Shraddha Kapoor’s ABCD 2. So much that the dance flick turned out to be the biggest opener of 2015 till now, beating the previous record held by Akshay Kumar’s Gabbar is Back. The film continued its winning streak at the box office on day two as well.

Varun and Shraddha’s mind blowing chemistry and the spectacular dance performances throughout the film ensured that the audiences were in for a visual treat of sorts. While the cast tried out as many as 20 different forms of dance, the viewers got exactly what they expected- a full blown dance film, an Indianised version of Step Up! While the film has nothing to do with the Holly flick, in terms of content or story, ABCD 2 definitely is our desi Step-Up, taking the dance genre to another level altogether.

ABCD, without any big face had become a superhit and earned around Rs 45 crore at the box office. But with Varun and Shraddha giving the sequel a greater reach, the film has witnessed a bombastic opening on Friday and followed it up with another huge Saturday. While the film earned Rs 14.30 crore on its opening day, it added another Rs 14.51 on Saturday, taking the two day total to a massive Rs 28.82 crore.

Given that Sunday will see a major jump in the collections, the first weekend collections will be around Rs 45 crore, which was the lifetime collection of the prequel. This will also be Shraddha Kapoor’s fourth hit film and Varun’s fifth in a row. Along with that, ABCD 2 is all set to reord the highest opening weekend collections for the year as well, beating Gabbar’s 40 crore opening weekend record.

But will ABCD 2 be able to sustain the collections like Tanu Weds Manu Returns and enter the Rs 100 crore club? Although it seems much likely now, everything would depend on the weekday collections which will prove to be a vital acid test for the film.
