A Delhi court has directed the city police to verify the earlier marriages of a woman on the complaint filed by her fourth husband alleging that she is a con-woman who has cheated several men by marrying them deceitfully to extort money.

Metropolitan Magistrate Neha Gupta Singh directed the Investigation officer (IO) to "verify the status of the marriages" and submit a report on the next date of hearing, i.e., February 9.

The court's order came after Balvinder Singh, a truck driver, moved an application to register an FIR against his wife Shalu alias Malkit Kaur alleging that "she is a con-woman who is unabatedly and concomitantly in a concerted maladroit manner cheating several innocuous men and their family members by marrying them during the life time of her previous husbands through deceitfully false facts, in connivance and conspiracy with her parents and relatives.

In his plea, filed through advocate Prashant Manchanda, the complainant alleged that he met Shalu in November 2011 following which they were married. In October 2014, a son was born out of the wedlock and the problems started.

The complaint alleged that Shalu, with a preconceived plan, deliberately picked up pointless fights and indulged in unnecessary arguments with the applicant and his family for no reason. She also threatened to implicate the family in a false case if she was not given Rs 10 lakh.

Following this, she left the house by deserting both her husband and child. Despite repeated attempts to get her back, she did not return. Disappointed, he (husband) tried to reconstruct the events and while doing so he stumbled upon the family of a person, who came out to be the first husband of Shalu.

Shalu had married him in 2005 and after 2-3 years of marriage deserted him. The complaint claimed that more such marriages were unearthed, where she had deserted her previous husbands and extorted money from them by threatening to implicate them in false cases.

The application stated that it is a bogus marriage racket run by the accused lady and her family. It further alleged that the racket has its tentacles spread across Delhi-NCR areas and hence an FIR should be registered against her to unearth more victims.
