Snatchers target scribe in Mayur Vihar

A recent spate of snatching incidents in the Capital have left Delhiites worried. After Ukrainian Ambassador to India, Dr Igor Polikha's phone was snatched on Wednesday while taking a selfie near Red Fort on Wednesday, a journalist was attacked by two-wheeler borne snatchers near a police residential building in Mayur Vihar on Friday.

A recent spate of snatching incidents in the Capital have left Delhiites worried. After Ukrainian Ambassador to India, Dr Igor Polikha's phone was snatched on Wednesday while taking a selfie near Red Fort on Wednesday, a journalist was attacked by two-wheeler borne snatchers near a police residential building in Mayur Vihar on Friday.

The victim, who had just moved to Delhi from Mumbai this week, was in a cycle rickshaw when she was targeted. She sustained injuries after she fell off the rickshaw while resisting the snatchers.

According to the victim's complaint, she was heading from Pandav Nagar to Mayur Vihar at around 7 pm on Friday when the incident took place. Police have registered a case in this regard and efforts to nab the culprits are being made, the police said.

The victim, who did not wish to be named, said, "I was in a cycle rickshaw going towards Mayur Vihar metro station, and as we nearing a police residential building, two men on a scooter snatched my bag and ran away with my wallet containing valuables."

She then called up the police and got a case registered. Senior police officers said that they are checking the CCTV footage to ascertain the sequence of incidents and identify the accused or the vehicle used by them. "Efforts to nab the culprits are being made," police said.

This incident which comes the snatching incident involving the Ukrainian Ambassador has once again brought snatching into the limelight.

Police however, late on Friday night, said that they had recovered the snatched phone and one person has been arrested.

Cases of snatching have risen despite initiatives taken by the Delhi Police.
Juveniles are active members of these gangs run mainly by hardened criminals.
Juveniles when arrested, do undergo the full punishment under the law.
Since snatching is not counted as heinous crime, offenders often get bail easily.
