Police seize over Rs 2 crore in old currency

he Delhi police has so far seized over Rs 2 crore in old currency ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

On Friday night, police arrested a 32-year-old person and seized Rs 96 lakh from his possession.

"On Friday, during a routine check at the main gate of ISBT in Anand Vihar, we searched a man who was carrying a bag. The bag contained bundles of old Rs 1,000 currency notes. We found Rs 96 lakh in the bag," DCP (East District) Rishi Pal said.

According to police, when they asked him about the cash he was carrying, he could not give a satisfactory explanation.

"The accused has been identified as Nazer-e-Alam, a resident of Gorakhpur. He has been arrested u/s of the 103 DP Act, and the amount has been seized. We have also intimated the Income Tax Department," Pal said.
A senior official said Nazer was just a carrier, and the money belonged to another person who has not been identified yet.

Earlier, Delhi police and I-T officials raided five places on Wednesday and Thursday, including Chandni Chowk, Paharganj, Connaught Place, Hauz Khas and Shakarpur. Police found Rs 75 lakh after the inspection drive.

"The demonetized notes are usually sent to smaller towns, where they are converted into new Rs 100 and Rs 2,000 notes," said a senior Delhi official.INTRO: Police seize over `2 crore in old currency
