The Capital witnessed an increased number of murders, rapes, thefts and fatal accidents in the first quarter of 2018, compared to the corresponding period last year, a Delhi Police data shows. However, fewer heinous crimes have been committed in the same period.

According to the data, up to March 31, 2018, the police recorded 130 cases of murder which was 127 last year. 487 cases of rape were registered this quarter while the number remained 465 in 2017. Further, motor vehicle thefts rose to 10,130 from 9,448, total thefts rose to 32,110 from 30,665 and fatal accidents rose from 354 to 369 in the first quarter of 2018. Kidnapping for ransom also recorded one additional case than the five that were reported last year.

However, the total number of heinous crimes recorded in the first quarter of 2017 and 2018 remained, 1,654 and 1,518, respectively, the data reads. Cases of assault also increased.

In all, 6,527 cases of heinous crime were recorded in 2017, which was less than 8,238 as reported in 2016. The crime in the city has seen a rise of 400% since 2011. In 2011, only 53,353 cases under the Indian Penal Code were recorded, the number grew to a mammoth 2,22,580 in 2017.

Senior police officers, however, said that the significant rise in the number of crimes is because of the introduction of easier means and technology in the registration of cases. "Over the years, the common man's hassles of registering a case with the police have become a lot easier. Now you do not even need to visit a police station to lodge a complaint and an FIR is filed. One can even track the progress if their case online. These are the factors which add up as major reasons for such a huge increase in the total number of crimes," said a senior police officer.

He also said that the Delhi Police is proactive in dealing with crime and its prevention. "Our focus is on crime prevention. A number of mobile applications have also been launched over time to make it easier for the people and victim to approach the police.Over the past few years, many initiatives have been taken and we will continue such efforts with utmost dedication," the officer said.
