A 33-year old contract killer— wanted in the murder case of Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Zaid in Lucknow — has been arrested by the Delhi Police on Monday morning
Mannan alias Khalifa alias Murtaja alias Monu was not just a well known gangster but one of the best shooters of the Shaukat Pasha and Satya Prakash gang in South East Delhi.
"Khalifa has over 22 criminal cases registered against him including murder, dacoity, robbery, attempt to murder, kidnapping, snatching. After he killed Zaid, the UP police declared a reward of Rs 12,000 for his arrest," said Romil Baaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South-East.
The arrest took place at around 1:45am on Monday morning. The police team investigating the case were informed the accused shooter would be coming towards Moolchand late on Sunday night. They then erected a barricade not just on the main road but the service road as well.
When police officials deployed at the barricade saw a Hero Honda motorcycle coming from Moolchand and heading towards LSR college road, they intercepted the motorcycle. But instead of stopping the rider hit the barricades and tried to flee. The police team then intercepted him from all sides, over-powered him and took him into custody.
Police said Khalifa was responsible for a shootout last Thursday in the Okhla Mandi area where a person identified as Mohammad Zaki was shot on the leg. Investigating the case, police officials said that during the probe they found that Zaki was was having problems with his wife Ayesha, and their suspicions fell on a man Ayesha had been seeing regularly — Khalifa.
"While Khalifa was lodged in Tihar jail he met Zaki and both of them became friends. Post their release from jail, Khalifa started visiting Zaki's home where he got close to his wife Ayesha. This became a problem for Zaki who objected to this," Baaniya said.
Police officials said that Ayesha, along with her brother Sarfaraz, hatched a plan to eliminate Zaki. They took Khalifa into their confidence and offered Rs 5 lakhs to him in order to eliminate Zaki. Police officials said that Khalifa got an advance of the money but only shot Zaki in the leg as he did not receive full payment.
Asked about his background, police said that Khalifa was a member of the Satya Prakash alias Satte Gang who were responsible for robberies and dacoity in Delhi and neighbouring areas.
He had been arrested many times and while he was in jail in 2016 he got in touch with the notorious gangster Salim who is facing trial in many criminal cases.
Salim had then allegedly given him the contract to kill Samajwadi Party leader Mohammed Zaid which he is believed to have carried out last year police said.
