In a breakthrough study done by researchers from India, it has been confirmed that diabetes can lead to obesity and high levels of cholesterol. The research done on a sample size of 226 patients from Delhi hospitals has been published in the Journal of International School of Medicine. The doctors have also revealed that 20 per cent of the healthy adults also have high lipids levels and thus should get their lipid profile checked regularly.

Through the research, the doctors have confirmed that diabetes causes 'dyslipidemia', a condition where there are unhealthy levels of lipid in the blood. Of the 226, 44 samples have been published for the study. The sample size was in the age group between 22 and 75 years.

"Generally when a person is diagnosed with diabetes, he/she is asked to get the blood sugar level tested. But this study confirms that lipid profile should also be checked as for 60 per cent of the diabetic samples had bad lipids. We all know that bad lipids mean high cholesterol which leads to heart attack," said Dr Vikas Dhikav, Coordinator of Clinical Research Association of India.

226 samples, all from Delhi hospitals were taken for the research and their lipid levels which means LDL (low-density lipoprotein), HDL, and triglycerides were compared. A person is known to be suffering from 'dyslipidemia' if his LDL and Triglycerides (also known as bad lipids) are higher than 100mg/dL or HDL (good lipids) are below 35mg/dL. The samples were also tested for waist and hip ratio as belly fat and hip fat also shows signs of bad cholesterol. Diabetes currently affects more than 62 million Indians, which is more than 7.1% of the adult population. The average age for the onset is 42.5 years. Nearly 1 million Indians die because of diabetes every year.

According to the Indian Heart Association, India is projected to be home to 109 million individuals with diabetes by 2035. A study by the American Diabetes Association reports that India will see the greatest increase in people diagnosed with diabetes by 2030.
