Aimed towards increasing the safety of women in the national capital, the Delhi government on Saturday initiated the move of lighting more than 7,000 dark spots.

According to officials, while the initiation will largely benefit the areas under the jurisdiction of North and East Delhi Municipal Corporations, the spots are those which were identified through an NGO working towards safety of women.

"The dark spots were identified by NGO SafetiPin, which it had shared with the Delhi Police. However, the work on the dark spots has been initiated after PWD obtained no-objection certificate from the North and East MCDs," said a Delhi government official.

The official added that a total of 7,483 dark spots will be lit up before March 31 as part of the initiation. The project is a part of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) manifesto launched to ensure women safety in the capital before Assembly election in 2015.

PWD Minister Mr Satyendra Jain said that after completion of the work, the NGO will conduct an audit to ensure that satisfactory work has been done.

"We hope that the South MCD will also expedite the process of granting NOC to the PWD so that lighting of dark spots across Delhi could be completed at the earliest, said Jain. He added that the government has also sought suggestions from stakeholders on how to make Delhi safe for women.
