Delhi’s infamous Bus-Rapid-Transit (BRT) corridor is all set for a makeover that will replace the bus-only lanes with subways housing cafes and shops, and the foot-over bridges with dedicated cycle lanes.

The BRT corridor was recently dismantled and the new plan awaits Cabinet approval.

Sources in the Delhi government said that dedicated cycle lanes to promote environment friendly transport amidst growing pollution concern in the national capital is a must. The official added that while proposal has already been finalised by Public Works Department, certain additions are being made to provide commuters a smoother ride.

The project is aimed at increasing mobility in and around the area and give the commuters some respite from the perennial traffic jams which have continued since the construction of BRT. The project, if found successful, may also be replicated on other major roads as well.

“The roads will be lifted at six locations on the existing road and space would be made for the market. The subways will be of low incline. Meanwhile, we are planning to make parking sites near the subways for easy accessibility,” said a senior Delhi government official.

The official added, “The subways will be made keeping in mind pedestrians and to ensure them a safer way to commute, at the same time we also want to promote commercial activities to ensure revenue for the government.”

The BRT has been constantly under controversy ever since its construction began in 2006. The 150 crore project was a brain child of the then Delhi CM Sheila Dixit, who intended to make the busy carriageway free of traffic lights. However, ever since its inception it was riddled with trafic jams due to poor management and vehicles constantly jumping lanes.

After coming to power, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had ordered dismantling of the road in February earlier this year.

Apart from constant traffic jams, the project had also hit charges of corruption by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
