‘The pitch is ready and the players are set. It’s time for you to sing the winning anthem of this year’ is the line used to pitch the newest song that has been released from the soundtrack of Akshay Kumar’s Gold, ‘Ghar Layenge Gold’. The song has been composed by Sachin-Jigar, who also provide some of the vocals with Daler Mehndi. The lyrics to the song have been written by Javed Akhtar. Like the name (and the trailer, and everything else about the film) suggests, this song is all about that feeling of patriotism.

The lyrics are pretty straightforward in their motive of inspiring viewers and listeners to stand up and applaud the nation. With lyrics like Jab chale jia le jum jum, tab jag me hoge doom doom, dekhegi duniya gum gum, hum sabko harake, ghar layenge gold’, it’s pretty easy to decipher the overall tone that the song tries to impart. The particular line ‘ghar layenge gold’ adds a little bit more specificity to the actual plot of the film, which concerns Akshay Kumar’s character, Tapan Das, wanting to see the Indian hockey team win a medal at the Olympics for a free India.

Overall, Javed Akhtar has done a pretty good job with ensuring that the audience does get what the song and the movie are about. Daler Mehndi is at his usual best, and strays from the normal camp and masala fare to give a truly uplifting song.

The song is also composed in the similar vein of songs you’d see in movies like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag or Chak De India or Dangal, with chants in the background and that energy and beat that keeps on pushing you to just try harder (as if we weren’t already doing enough of that!).

The song came with a video, which takes a lot of its shots from the trailer itself, with a few new ones for good measure. Like the trailer, most of the starring cast of the film gets a good amount of screentime, but the real star is still Akshay Kumar and that accent he manages to pull off. It does well with not giving away too many details about the film than the trailer did, leaving us excited enough to watch the movie.
