It’s been 20 years since dancehall superstar Sean Paul released his debut album, Stage One. The artiste has given major hits like Get Busy from his Grammy-winning album Dutty Rock and Temperature from The Trinity. His latest release is another groovy track, Tip Pon It, with Major Lazer.

SOCIAL MEDIA MAGIC

In the two decades, not only has the music changed but also the way it reaches listeners. These are the days of social media, which was not as big when Sean debuted. “Oh, my! Earlier they would buy more tapes and CDs to listen to our songs, but nowadays, social media and internet have made it so much easier to get closer to your fans and also keep them updated about your projects and life. People now have larger options and platforms to showcase their talent, which wasn’t quite open during my time,” Sean observed in an interaction ahead of his recent tour to India. The rapper and recording producer also points out that the margins have raised. So many people are now getting opportunities through YouTube, which is really good. It’s a powerful platform I would personally say, which is working in everyone’s favour.”

THE EVERGREEN DANCEHALL

Sean’s career is said to have had a resurgence in 2016 after his biggies Cheap Thrills with Sia and “Rockabye with Clean Bandit. Ask the singer what keeps dancehall evergreen as a genre and he exclaims, “Isn’t that good! I would say variety is needed and, today, all kinds of genres work.” He points out that people’s tastes change and they are open to new music that gives the artiste more scope to play with the changes and collaboration. “Just like other genres, Dancehall will always be evergreen and can never fade,” he states.
