Caught in a dilemma over taking a decision on former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa’s demand for reinstatement as Karnataka chief minister, the BJP’s central leadership is now contemplating to gauge public opinion before deciding on its future course of action.

Fears of a split in the party and collapse of the first BJP government in South India has forced the BJP leadership to tread cautiously. Party sources said BJP national president Nitin Gadkari has favoured conducting a survey through a private organisation to understand the public opinion in Karnataka about the recent unsavoury developments in the BJP.

The survey would include questions about corruption charges against former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and other former ministers, the porngate episode, infighting for the chief minister’s post and whether Yeddyurappa should be reinstated as CM.

With the Central Empowered Committee(CEC) — appointed by the Supreme Court to investigate illegal mining in Karnataka — submitting its affidavit, recommending a probe into the alleged kickbacks received by companies being headed by Yeddyurappa’s relatives, the BJP’s central leadership is in no mood to take a decision on Yeddyurappa till the Supreme Court delivers its orders.

Meanwhile, Yeddyurappa’s son BY Vijayendra is filing a reply to the CEC’s affidavit. His counsels are in Delhi to file the reply before the CEC.

Sources said the reply would emphasise that Yeddyurappa did not issue a mining licence to mining baron Praveen Chandra during his tenure as chief minister.

Therefore, his counsels will try to prove that the Rs6 crore given by Chandra to companies owned by Yeddyurappa’s relatives are not alleged kickbacks.

The reply is also likely to highlight that the two companies owned by Yeddyurappa’s relatives received `6 crore as unsecured loan in November 2009 after signing agreements with Chandra. These companies have refunded `1 crore in November 2009 and `1.5 crore in April 2011, respectively, to Chandra.

Vijayendra’s counsels are also likely to question the CEC’s recommendation before the Supreme Court as the matter is already being heard by the Lokayukta court and Karnataka high court.
