Support is growing for Sandalwood actress Nikitha Thukral, who has been unceremoniously handed over a three-year ban by the Kannada Film Producers’ Association for alleged intimacy with Tugudeepa Darshan that caused marital discord between the Challenging Star and his wife Vijayalakshmi.

Terming the attitude of producers’ body sexist, the Karnataka State Women’s Commission on Tuesday said that it was readying a notice questioning the ban. The women’s commission said that the “outsider” Nikita was being made a scapegoat.

Nikita, who has acted in several Kannada movies, is based out of Mumbai. The three-year ban on the actor was slammed on Sunday even as Darshan, facing charges of physically assaulting his wife and three-year-old son, was left scot-free. On Monday, the Karnataka Cine Actors’ Association had made it clear that it would support Nikitha in the event of the actor filing an official complaint with them.

On Tuesday, C Manjula, the chairperson of the state women’s commission, said that the panel was planning to protect the actor’s interest. There is no legal sanctity for the ban, said chairperson of the commission, C Manjula.

“The association has banned Nikitha without following the course of natural justice. It is unfair on Nikitha. She is in no way connected to the offence that Darshan is said to have committed. We will question the basis on which the ban was slapped. This could ruin Nikitha’s career,” she said.

Pramila, a member of the women’s commission and also a film producer, said that the ban projected gender bias in the industry. “Those behind the ban should have examined the alleged link up between the two actors. Even if the two were involved in an affair, the punishment should be meted out to Darshan, not Nikitha,” she said.

Pramila said that the commission would press for an explanation from the producers’ association and seek reversal of the ban order.

On Monday, Nikita was reported to have suffered low blood pressure due to stress.
