Two women who exploited superstition to con people of their money and valuables have been arrested, police said on Wednesday.

Muskan, 21, and Shamshad, 34, both residents of Gandhinagar in Kengeri Satellite Town, were arrested a week ago based on a complaint by Ameena B, a housewife residing in KG Halli’s Muslim Colony, who said she had lost 325 gram gold. Investigators recovered 320 gram gold worth Rs6 lakh from the accused.

The duo scared Ameena into believing that a ghost would claim the life of one of her family members and also deprive the family of its wealth, police said.

The women had earlier met Ameena and gathered information about her family. They scared her into believing that the ghost would kill a male member in the family.

Muskan and Shamshad then allegedly offered to conduct a puja to a Baba so that the ghost could be exorcised from the haunted house. Ameena fell into the trap and invited the women to perform the puja.

Ameena was approached when the male members of the family were away. She was warned against telling the men about the ghost or the puja.

“If a male member comes to know of the ghost or puja, he will go blind,” a police officer quoted the duo as telling Ameena.

The conwomen performed the puja when the male members of the family were not at home. Ameena was asked to keep all her jewellery in a bag, which was kept where the puja was conducted.

“She was told not to open the bag for a week,” the police said.

Only when the bag was opened did Ameena realise that she had been conned. The victim had no clue that she had been hoodwinked.

The police said that Muskan and Shamshad might have committed similar offences elsewhere. Investigators were probing three similar cases reported in the city.

Muskan hailed from Delhi, while Shamshad was from Tamil Nadu. They became friends after staying together in Kengeri Satellite Town, police said.
