A 20-year-old newly wed woman died after being run over by a train while she was crossing a track in Benniganahalli on Wednesday evening.

The deceased has been identified as V Sunitha, a resident of Benakanahalli on Bannerghatta Road. The incident took place at 6.30pm when she was returning home after attending computer class in Baiyappanahalli.

People noticed Sunitha trying to cross the railway track and shouted to alert her. She could neither hear the noise of the approaching train nor the public’s screams. The police suspect that she was on an earphone listening to music from her cellphone.

The Cantonment Railway police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to Bowring hospital for postmortem which was held after an inquest by the tahasildar concerned. Inquest over the dead body of a woman by a tahasildar is required if she dies within seven years of her marriage.

Sunitha married Shiva Kumar, a private firm employee, five months ago. “Her parents did not make any allegation against Shiva Kumar. So we have registered a case of unnatural death,” said M Bhaskar, a sub-inspector of Cantonment Railway police station.

Auto driver killed A 30-year-old autorickshaw driver, who was crossing a railway track, died after being hit by a train in Malleswaram in the wee hours of Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Sri Rama, a resident of Kurubarahalli. The incident occurred near the railway track in Milk Colony, Malleswaram.

Sri Rama failed to notice the train and started to cross the track. He was hit by the train and died instantly. Local residents spotted the body around 8 am. The body was handed over to the family after postmortem.

Sri Rama is survived by his wife and a child. The City Railway police have registered a case.
