Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda said the government has signed 42 MoUs to attract investment of more than Rs1.1 lakh crore in agri-related businesses.

At the concluding session of the First Global Agri-Business and Food Processing Summit, organised by the state government on Friday, Gowda said the two-day programme focused on agriculture infrastructure sector such as horticulture, fisheries, sericulture, animal husbandry and food processing.

"There is a positive response from industry partners. They have promised an investment of Rs35,488 crore for developing agri-infrastructure. MoUs worth Rs3,845 crore have been signed for agri- and horticulture-engineering services; Rs2,506 crore for animal husbandry sector; Rs1,575 crore for fisheries; Rs9,635 crore for food processing; and Rs1,923 crore for knowledge hubs in agriculture and related sectors," he said.

Gowda said discussion with investors would help in improving agriculture productivity, generating employment, enhancing exports, improving economic conditions of farmers and entrepreneurs, and providing 'nutritional security'.

Gowda sought linkage with processing, mechanisation and infrastructure industries to increase the value of crops. He noted that sectors such as sericulture, poultry, bee-keeping, fisheries, animal husbandry and others would have better quality with industry involvement and would benefit farmers. The food processing industry will enhance the value of product and contribute to the state's economic development, he added.

The government would take steps to protect farmers against nature's fury and price fluctuation. Since many parts of the state are rain-fed, Gowda said high-tech cultivation techniques are the need of the hour to ensure constant returns to farmers and address food security.

"With meaningful partnerships between farmers and agro-based industries, a balanced development of the state is ensured. A study conducted in foreign countries showed that agriculture, animal and meat industry, fisheries, horticulture etc have become revenue-generating sectors and contribute to a better quality of life," said Gowda.
