A 24-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her husband over a quarrel that broke out over her desire to buy gold ornaments, in Gottigere, Bannerghatta Road.

The police said Vanajashree, wife of storeowner Vinay Kumar (30), was persistent in her demand that Kumar purchase gold ornaments.

Police said Kumar killed his wife on Friday night and drove to Punganoor, Andhra Pradesh, to dispose of the body. He returned home and filed a complaint on Saturday alleging that his wife was missing. He said tantriks had kidnapped Vanajashree. The police found lemons and kumkum (vermilion) in front of Kumar’s house. Since Kumar was behaving suspiciously, the police questioned him. After rigorous interrogation, he broke down and confessed to killing Vanajashree on Friday.

Kumar said that for the past few months, Vanajashree had been forcing him to purchase gold ornaments. Though he told had her that he would buy ornaments after one of his friends repaid a loan, she began exerting pressure on Kumar to speed up the process of retrieving money from his friend. The duo had a fight and Kumar hit her with a rod, killing her.

Later, he drove his vehicle to Punganoor, Andhra Pradesh, and disposed of the body. He returned to the city and filed a missing complaint to cover his tracks. A police team has rushed to Andhra Pradesh to trace the body.

Deputy commissioner of police (South-East) PS Harsha said, “We have clues that Vinay killed her. But first, we have to find the body.”

Vanajashree and Kumar were married for five years and the couple has a three-year-old son. Vanajashree’s parents have also filed a complaint against Kumar.
