What should have been a joyous occasion descended into a nightmare as a wedding reception was brought to a bloody halt when an armed gang stormed into the reception hall and three of the gang were hacked to death by members of the wedding party. The police said the incident happened around 9.30pm on Saturday at the hotel on Sampige Road in front of Food World in Malleswaram. The deceased have been identified as Lambu Nataraja of Kodandaramapur, Gnanesh and Bharat Raj.
The police suspect that members of the wedding party had been forewarned of an impending attack. The target of the gang is speculated to be Prabhu, a relative of the bride.
Police suspect that about nine members of a gang entered the hall while another five were in a vehicle parked outside. The police rushed to the spot and found Lambu Nataraj and his associates dead at the scene. Two bodies were lying on the first floor of the hotel while another body was found on the second floor. Guests were frightened out of their wits when they saw the gang wielding machetes charge into the hall.
In the rush to get out of the hall, members of the wedding party, including Prabhu, also fled. Senior officers including deputy commissioner of police (north division) visited the spot and examined the crime scene.
The police have taken some hotel staff in for questioning. The police confirmed that the attackers came to the hotel in a white Tata Sumo and then the survivors fled in the same vehicle.
The police suspect the animosity between the two groups goes back to an incident in 2009.
A youth, Ranjan, was killed at Sheshadripuram when he went to purchase clothes for his marriage.
Ranjan was hacked to death in front of his fiance. Police claim that the gang comprised Ranjan’s brother and his friends.
