The City Market police have arrested two men for stealing jewellry and valuables from wedding halls and recovered gold jewellery worth Rs15 lakh from them.

The accused are Mahaveer alias Dhanraj, from Gadag, and Dadapeer, from Tumkur. The two met in Bangalore , where they had come to make a living. They became fast friends and decided to make money by stealing. They used to target wedding halls.

DCP (west) Sidramappa said the police seized 550 grams of gold jewellry, worth `15 lakh, from the duo. He said the two were now out on bail, adding that they were involved in thefts in other police station limits too. He said they chose to strike at wedding halls because they figured out that there they could commit theft easily as people would be busy attending wedding.

At the wedding hall, they used to observe people for some time, look for the family members of the bride and the groom, then used to follow them to their rooms and wait for them to leave, after which they used to commit theft. The police said they used to target even locked rooms and suitcases. They used to pledge the jewellry with financiers, pawn brokers and reputed gold finance firms.

The police said the duo then used to leave the city and stay in another district or state for a couple of months. They returned to the city only after spending the entire money they got from theft.

They stayed in private lodges in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chikkamagalur, Shimoga, Hassan and other places. Most of their money was spent on call girls, drugs and alcohol.

The two are repeat offenders and Kalasipalya police, too, had arrested them earlier. They have been involved in a couple of robbery cases too. They are involved in 11 cases in Rajarajeshwarinagar, Kengeri, SJ Park, Magadi Road and Upparpet police stations limits.
