The Rs15-crore Memorial Park, which had been entangled in a legal battle between ex-servicemen and environmentalists last year, was initially scheduled to be thrown open to the public on January 26. However, delay in erecting a monolithic stone pillar at the Memorial Park has forced the National Military Memorial Committee and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to put off the inauguration by another three months.
“The Flag pole and motivation hall have already been completed. But the transportation of the monolithic stone pillar, Veeragallu, from the outskirts of the city to Memorial Park is taking time due to cost constraints,” said Maj Gen MC Nanjappa of the National Military Memorial Committee.
The 70-feet-tall Veeragallu weighing about 400 tonnes will a symbolic representation of the Unknown Soldier which will inspire the visitors of the war memorial to join the armed forces, said Maj Gen Nanjappa.
Having missed the previous deadline, the National Military Memorial Committee is looking at an August 15 deadline. To ensure that the target is met, a meeting would be convened along with the BDA officials in a couple of days to speed up the ongoing work and transport the Veeragallu to the park.
Meanwhile, at the memorial, a de-commissioned air force plane has already been installed. In addition to the plane, a de-commissioned armoured tank and a war ship would also be installed in the park.
The memorial has already had its share of controversies with environmentalists opposing the project stating that it would be a violation of environmental norms if the memorial came up on the Indira Gandhi Musical Park.
The environmentalists had also approached the Supreme Court opposing the park. However, the court ruled in favour of ex-servicemen and paved the way for the construction of the memorial.
