The state primary and secondary education minister and officials of the state department of Pre-University Education were happy with the second-year PUC results announced on Thursday.

This year, there has been a significant increase in the pass percentage of fresh candidates — 61.94% compared to 50.78% in 2009. Officials said 4,26,125 fresh candidates had registered for the exam; 4,13,496 attended the exams, of which 2,56,108 candidates cleared it.

“Compared to the last few years, the results this year is very good,” state primary and secondary education minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said. “We are happy with it.” Kageri said repeaters make up a huge percentage of those who took the PU exams. “This year, nearly 1,77,850 candidates appeared for the exams as repeaters,” he said.

“Over the last two years, we had put in a lot of efforts to improve the PUC results. For the last few years, the PUC department was neglected.

But we have initiated many academic activities to improve its efficiency,” he said.

This year’s success could be attributed to the fact that there was no shortage of teachers in colleges, Kageri said. “We had recruited 2,500 PU college lecturers and had also allowed guest lecturers in colleges at the beginning of the academic year itself,” he said.

“We also trained the teachers, and that, too, had an impact,” the minister said. “Making attendance compulsory for both first and second PUC students, and state-level question paper for first PU exams also helped.”

“This year, too, the pass percentage of girls was more than that of boys,” Kageri pointed out. Boys needed to work harder, he said.
The overall pass percentage of urban students has seen a slight improvement this year. Of the 3,01,773 freshers who had appeared from urban areas, 1,87,375 cleared the exams. From rural areas, 1,11,723 fresh candidates took the exams and 68,733 passed.
