Unsung heroes of the Bangalore rewarded

It was a big day for people from different walks of life each of whom were recognised for their outstanding work in various field.  The Namma Bengaluru awards were given away on Saturday at National College Grounds recognising some of them and rewarded the work they have been doing for years. Among them was also a BBMP purakarmika Lakshamma, for whom the lakh of rupess which was the award will make a huge difference.

Uday Vijayan bagged the award in citizen’s category for his work in creating awareness towards fire safety. His efforts started after the Carlton Towers tragedy. “A year and a half ago, when we started, we didn’t know we would be relevant. It is the anger and grief that has been the driving force,” said Vijayan.

UV Singh, from the Indian Forest Services, who was chosen as winner in the government employee category, has decided to donate the prize money to the orphaned children of forest department officials. “This award is for all those officers who laid down their life, fighting against corruption,” he said.    

The Congress’s Krishna Byre Gowda was selected as the winner in elected representative’s category for his work towards helping citizens get their ration card. On a light note, the politician noted that Namma Bengaluru had to courage to award a politician.

“This just goes to say that there are good politicians as well. The good apples and the bad apples must be separated. Every state needs political leadership and society must see how this can be promoted,” said Gowda.

The Bengalurean of the Year Award was given to Lokayukta court judge Justice NK Sudhindra Rao.

Although not present, his message on receiving the award was that it was humbling, as it had directly come from the people.’
