A 20- year-old BTech student studying in Nagpur and his friend were kidnapped by a three-member gang from Cottonpet in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Shyam Paul, a resident of Silchar in Assam district and 4th semester student of Priyadarshini College of Engineering, Nagpur, and his friend Chakravarthy, were the victims.
The youth had just checked out of Srivari Lodge, Cottonpet Main Road, when three men in a car blocked their way, dragged them into the car, and sped.
The driver of the car that the young men had engaged, Senthil, a native of Puducherry, alerted Cottonpet police. Police suspect that Paul worked with a gang which collected money from North Indian students, promising seats in medical and engineering colleges in Bangalore.
Police are following leads that suggest that Paul and his friend may have been abducted by students who were cheated by him. “We are making all efforts to rescue the two. We suspect students who had given money to Paul to get seats in colleges and found that they were cheated may have abducted him,” a senior police official said.
Paul’s father, Sudarshan Paul, a contractor in Assam, told police that the abductors had not made any ransom call.
The driver of the youth said he had taken the men to Goa. Police said the two men had visited Puducherry too, and also picked up a friend from BIAL.
On July 18, Paul and Chakravathy booked a room in Srivari Lodge, after a friend who had joined them briefly in the city from Mumbai returned there.
