A father of two strangled his wife of 11 years after a quarrel with her over his failure to get back her pledged gold.

The incident happened on Tuesday in Malleswaram. Chandrakala alias Roopa, 37, had pledged her jewellery to help her husband Mohan Raju, 39, buy a car. Raju is a former employee of a travel agency, which hired his car regularly. Despite getting money from the tour company, he did not bother to get back the pledged gold and the couple used to fight over this.

On Monday night too, Raju had a quarrel with Roopa, after which he went out of the house and spent the rest of the night in his car.
On Tuesday, around noon, he went back to his house, only to start another round of fight with his wife. This time, it took a violent turn. In a fit of fury, he strangled her with a towel.

Later, he called Roopa’s sister-in-law and said she had fallen unconscious. She arrived about 5 pm and found Roopa lying dead on the floor. She called her husband Bhaskar Raj (Roopa’s brother), who suspected something fishy and informed the police.

When questioned, Raju said that during the quarrel, he strangled his wife around 12.30 pm. Vyalikaval police arrested him.

The body of Roopa was handed over to the family after postmortem. Raj took his sister’s daughters to his house in New Guddadhahalli.

Youth killed
In another incident, an 18-year-old was killed by a boy during a graveyard ritual in Srirampura on Tuesday evening.

Sharath alias Kulla, a resident of Srirampura, was attending a special pooja for the dead. Among the offerings to the departed souls were special dishes and liquor bottles.

Sharath and his friends were furious when the boy took a bottle of brandy and asked one of Sharath’s friends to get him some water. The friend refused and the boy slapped him. Sharath was angry and started arguing with the boy, who suddenly took a knife from his pocket, stabbed him and fled.

Sharath died while undergoing treatment.

The juvenile has been taken into custody by Srirampura police and an inquiry is on.

“We are checking whether Sharath and the accused had any past disputes,” police said.

Man attacked over money disputes
A cab driver was attacked by a gang while he was returning to his home from a temple, on Bellary Main Road on Tuesday night.
The reason behind the attack is said to be a dispute over money.

Srinivas, 37, a resident of Sheshadripuram, had borrowed some money from Padma, a resident of Vyalikaval. When Srinivas did not return the money, Padma along with some other men planned to kill him.

The gang, including Padma, followed Srinivas when he was on the way to his house after visiting a temple. The group stopped him at Bellary Main Road and attacked him with machetes and other weapons.

“We have also found that Padma and Srinivas were in illegal relationship. Padma has been arrested and others are absconding,” police said.

Srinivas was rushed to the Nimhans by passers-by and then shifted to a private hospital. An attempt-to-murder case is registered in High Grounds police station.
