Three undertrials, lodged in the jail ward of the Krishnarajendra Hospital, escaped after duping the security persons and policemen on guard. The runaways have been identified as Sathish, Sunil and Thimmaraju.

One of the three men, Sathish, 30, a native of Kadur taluk, Chikkamagallur district, was involved in 40 cases, many of them relating to dacoity. He was admitted to KR Hospital for surgery for piles. “We had taken the permission of the 5th First Division Court, Mysore, for admitting the man for the surgical procedure,” Mysore jail superintendent TH Lakshminaryana said.

One of the cases in which Sathish was involved related to the murder of a security guard at Vidya Vikas Engineering College, Mysore, in 2008.
The second undertrial, Sunil, was admitted to hospital on January 13 for fever. He had been brought to Mysore from Hassan. He recovered on January 15, but the hospital retained him for reasons that only the hospital administrator was aware of. Suresh was facing charges of murder, theft and dacoity.

The third undertrial who escaped, Thimmaraju, had been shifted from Tumkur jail to the hospital for treatment of a neurological condition.

The KR Hospital has the latest surveillance camera system in place. At the time of the incident, this facility was not working. The three men were not in jail uniforms, but in regular clothes. That facilitated their escape, as they could merge with the crowd without attracting notice.
