The police department has decided to cancel the driving licence of traffic offenders involved in more than three accidents. Home minister R Ashok said this decision was taken to curb the menace of accidents caused due to rash driving.

While inaugurating the 23rd National Road Safety Week at

Sulaivan Police Grounds in Ashokanagar on Saturday, the minister said the government had taken the decision to ensure that innocent lives are not lost due to other person's rash and reckless driving.

He added that in the city there were about 800 persons who were involved in more than three accidents.

The police and RTO officials have been directed to withdraw their driving licences.

Pvt hosp told to admit accident cases
He added that it has been observed that private hospitals were not taking accident victims thereby delaying treatment to accident victims.

“Private hospitals should not hesitate to take accident victims as every second is important to save their lives. Even insurance companies should speed up the process of clearing the medical expenses of accident victims,” Ashok said.

The minister said the traffic police will install closed circuit cameras in 20 points in the city to monitor traffic.

“It makes easy to identify the offenders and vehicles involved in hit and run cases. It will help to stringent legal action against the offender,” he warned.

Drag racing
Ashok expressed concern over increasing number of youths indulging in drag racing and appealed to the parents that they should warn their children.

“There is also a considerable rise in the number of accidents occurring due to the use of mobile phones while driving. The same applies to drunk driving cases and around 60,000 were booked in 2011,” he added.
