The sight of the roofless and doorless public toilet on a street close to JC Road would be a blow to the city’s reputation as a tourist destination.

Reportedly, it has been more than nine months since the toilet, constructed at a corner between a petrol pump and a bank, was cleaned. One cannot even step into the facility as it is clogged with feces, urine, and water. The floor is covered with waste, including plastic bottles, soiled clothes and slippers.

“It has been more than nine months since the toilet was cleaned. When we told the pourakarmikas (conservancy workers) to clean it up, they said it was not their job,” said Nangappa, a security guard posted in a building located next to the toilet.

Earlier, a shopowner used to pay a worker to clean the toilets. But after his shop moved, nobody is willing to engage anybody and the toilet has became dirty, he said.

“Since I stay out all day, I have to bear the stench most,” said Hanumanthappa, a security guard posted at the nearby bank.
Those visiting the bank and the petrol pump have to bear with the foul smell emanating from the toilet.

Arumugam, an auto driver, said the situation gets worse after a shower.

“When it rains, the stinking sewage flows on to the streets,” he said.

The unhygienic condition of the toilet poses a threat to the health of passers-by and employees working in the vicinity.
PSV Sharma, who works with Vaishnavi Industries, which is located near the toilet, said the BBMP ignored his complaints on the toilet’s ill-maintenance.

“When I went to complain, I was asked which ward the toilet came under. Since I was new to Bangalore, I did not know the details except that it was on JC Road,” Sharma said.
When DNA contacted Sudham Nagar ward’s councillor Awayi, she said only half of JC Road came under her ward.  “I have the list of urinals and toilets in my ward and I make every effort to keep them clean. This toilet does not fall in my ward. It comes under ward number 119.”

Efforts to contact P Dhanraj, councillor of ward 119, for comments proved futile.
