This teenager played the loveable ‘Bunty chor’ and won the hearts of his neighbours by taking them on jolly rides in his Ford Ikon. And he used the same car to commit burglaries.

His lifestyle was recently cut short as he was returning from a jolly ride from Kanakapura. Upparpete police arrested him in Gandhinagar for a string of house thefts he committed in the city’s western outskirts.

Lakshman Kumar alias Suli, 19, of KS Layout, is cooling his heels behind bars along with Shivakumar, 32; Mahesh Rao alias Bheema, 31, of Banashankari; Rakshita Raju alias Raju, 34, of Nayandahalli; and Prashanth Achar, 20, of RGI Colony.

The police also seized 1.6 kg of gold jewellery, 2.8 kg silver articles, a car and a motorcycle. Their net worth is Rs46.53 lakh.

Suli led a lavish life with his underage lover and generously donated money to conduct Ganesha festival, processions and other public functions in his neighbourhood. No wonder, he became the hero of the locals.

Suli targeted locked houses and committed burglaries alone, but sought the help of the four-member gang to pledge the stolen jewellery with Achar, a Tumkur native, and a few jewellers in the city.

Quite often, the gang of four used to pledge the jewellery for just 25% of its actual worth with a leading finance company. And they cheated Suli whenever he went out of town by taking back the jewellery and selling it to others at the prevailing market rate.

Suli started committing crime in his early teens. He lost his father when he was a child and his mother had to struggle as a domestic help to make ends meet.

By the time Suli turned 18, he was involved in more than 11 house thefts, said the police. Three cases were registered against him in Rajarajeshwarinagar police station, three in Talaghattapura police station, and one each at Chandra

Layout, KP Agrahara and Tavarekere police station limits.
Although he had been arrested many a time, the police could not recover the stolen property until now.
