Meru cab drivers are being randomly arrested after the company sought police help to bring down violence. On Saturday, Jaya Karnataka accused the company and the police of jailing poor drivers without investigating whether they were behind the violent acts that took place last Saturday and Tuesday.

Jaya Karnataka members met additional commissioner of police (law and order), T Suneel Kumar, and handed over a memorandum of their demands for the welfare of the arrested drivers and their families.

“Wives of many drivers are on the roads and some of them approached us to save their husbands from the policemen’s wrath,” said a Jaya Karnataka member.  Meru suspected 30 to 40 people for their involvement in the violent acts that occurred last week and sought police help. Now, the police are randomly arresting them and the court is sending them to jail without case registers being produced before the court,” said B Gunaranjan Shetty, president of Jaya Karnataka, Bangalore.

“We also had information that the ones who burnt the cars were neither Meru drivers not drivers affiliated to us. But the company suspects that they were motivated by Jaya Karnataka or some political influence, which has led to confusion and fear among the rest of the drivers,” said Shetty.

The members appealed to the police to arrest the drivers after proper investigation.

However, what is happening now is that police are arresting the drivers at random to create fear among other drivers.

“We urge the company management and the police to stop creating such fear among other drivers and being merciless towards their families. They should investigate into each case by following the right procedure,” requested Ashwath P, a Jaya Karnataka member.
