While the Bangalore police are groping in the dark with no technical knowledge to handle skimming cases, scammers struck again withdrawing Rs75,000 from two debit cards belonging to software engineers from ATMs around MG Road since Sunday.

With this, the number of skimming cases registered in the police stations in the city have increased to nine since Monday;  Cubbon Park police registered five cases, and Ashok Nagar police received four complaints.

Admitting that there has been a sharp rise in skimming cases, joint commissioner B Dayananda said that the police are investigating to ascertain the modus operandi of the fraudsters.

“It is a clear case of skimming where scammers record details electronically using a magnetic device and then clone the card to withdraw money”,  he said.

Dayananda blamed the banks for not taking adequate measures to prevent such incidents.

“We have noticed that several  banks do not have security guards posted at the ATMs.  So, the scammers hit the ATMs between 11.30pm to 12.10am to make as much transactions as possible by installing a magnetic device into ATMs to record the details of the card holders and withdraw money,” he said.

“We are writing to all the banks across the city to enforce RBI safety guidelines by providing a unique PIN number for every account holder and for each transaction,” he said. Though rules have been made mandatory, most banks are yet to follow them, he added.

Meanwhile, Anandashekhar Anil, a software engineer with Accenture, complained to Ashok Nagar police that Rs50,000 has been withdrawn from his account from an Indian Bank ATM on MG Road. According to him, five transactions took place between 11.30pm and 12am on Sunday night, while he was at home.

“I immediately informed the bank and got my card blocked before filing a complaint with the police for investigations,” he said adding that his whole month’s salary has been debited.

Similarly, Shanthi D, a techie from Yelahankka, filed a complaint with Ashok Nagar police, stating that Rs25,000 has been withdrawn from her account from an ATM on MG Road at 12.36am on Sunday.
