Bangalore University vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev, who is facing yet another controversy as governor and BU chancellor HR Bhardwaj gave the varsity’s convocation a miss, said he was stressed with the false media reports regarding the incident. He had lashed out at the media personnel after the convocation on Thursday; he said he was simply disappointed with the media.

“I was stressed about the media reports saying that the governor did not attend because he was upset. I am fed up of these stories.   I knew he would not be attending the convocation three days prior to the event, as he had prior commitments in Kerala. But I probably should not have reacted the way I did, but I am disappointed,” he said on the sidelines of the event. He also said that reports of lapse of protocol in conferring honorary doctorates at convocation were also false. He said that there had been no flaws in the procedural process on his end.

‘Serve the poor’
Take care of the poor in the country. This was the message imparted by Bangalore University (BU) vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev at the inauguration of the one-day national workshop on intellectual property rights (IPR) that was conducted on Friday.

“We are now in the country where the benefits of freedom have not yet reached the poor. On one hand, we have a trillion-dollar economy and on the other hand, every day, children in the country die of hunger,” said Dev.

Dev said the attention should be on servicing the millions of people in the country who are below the poverty line.

Shifting his focus on IPR, he said: “Imagine what would have been the state of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series if there was no IPR. Another publisher would have taken it, published it in paperback.”
He reiterated that the focus in India should be on providing basic rights to its people. “We are here right now talking about IPR, but there are millions who don’t even know what their basic rights are,” he said.
