Even as the state’s top police official listed out some of the biggest achievements of the police, chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda said these achievements are mentioned every time and in the New Year, the police should set higher targets.

He was speaking at the Karnataka State Senior Police Officers’ Annual Conference on Monday. DG and IGP Shankar M Bidari said barring some small incidents in 2011, the police succeeded in maintaining law and order across the state.

He said the police did their job well during the by-elections in Bellary, Koppal and Davangere in 2011. Also, he added the police have cracked many high-profile cases in the past decade, such as the Telgi scam, bomb blast cases and Naxal-related cases.
While the police department gave itself a pat on its back, the chief minister said: “For the New Year, police should come up with new accomplishments, and I hope they do it.”

He added that people might be afraid to voice their doubts and fears, but they would question the track record of the police department if it does not improve its working style.

Gowda then shifted his focus to Naxalism, calling it a serious challenge for the police. He added that the Anti-Naxal Force and the police have not been coordinating their efforts — a main reason for the increase in Naxal activities.

Further, Gowda took note of the low rate of conviction and asked whether it is the judiciary’s fault or the police’s.

He said the police department should not lag behind in gathering evidence. Also, he said the department had utilised only 40% of the funds sanctioned.

Gowda said the entire budget should be utilised for optimal functioning of the police department.
