We would have been observing the second death anniversary of hundreds of people today had the militants properly connected the wiring of two powerful Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) packed with hundreds of iron pellets on April 17, 2010, at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Thankfully, that did not happen. Only two smaller IEDs exploded, while the third one was defused by the police. The two bigger and deadlier ones were found by the city police only the next day.

A senior police officer said: “The fourth bomb was found at the BMTC bus shelter on Queens Road, a few meters  from gate number one on April 18 morning. This was big and had a lot of iron pellets. If it had exploded on April 17, it would have been catastrophic. It was just a mistake committed by those who planted the bombs which prevented it from exploding—they failed to properly connect the wiring to the timer.”

After this, the police started checking other places and found a fifth bomb at gate number one. “The bomb was placed between the flex board and the compound wall. This bomb was equally big and could have taken many lives; but this too did not explode due to the goof-up in connecting the bomb to the timer,” the officer said.

The first bomb was placed near the footpath in front of the ADGP’s office at Anil Kumble Circle. This bomb exploded around 2.30 pm and as it was a low intensity one, there were no casualties, he said.

The second bomb exploded around 3.05 pm at gate number 12 and was placed behind the flex box and the compound wall. Due to the blast, 13 people, including viewers, security guards, Chinnaswamy Stadium staff and police officers, suffered minor injuries. The police found gunny bags and a yellow-coloured fluid splattered at the spot.

A third bomb was found at gate number 8.
