On Thursday afternoon Karnataka high court premises was spattered with blood when a young lawyer, Rajappa, stabbed 23-year-old Naveena Reddy, a junior advocate, to death for repeatedly rejecting his offers of marriage.

The incident took place in front of Court Hall 4 at 1.40pm. Rajappa later tried to commit suicide but was captured by the court security staff and admitted to Mallya Hospital in the city.

Eyewitnesses said Rajappa slit Naveena’s throat using a knife in front of other advocates. Naveena collapsed on the floor and died on the spot. Rajappa, meanwhile, fled from the spot and locked himself up in a nearby toilet and tried to stab himself to death.

The police handed over the victim’s body to the family after conducting the post-mortem at Bowring Hospital.

Naveena Reddy was staying in Rajajinagar and hailed from Jambapur in Chinthamani taluk of Kolar district.

Rajappa, 26, is a resident of Wilson Garden and belongs to Sheegalapalya in Srinivasapur taluk of Kolar district.

Police said Rajappa was three years senior to Naveena at Government Law College in Kolar. Rajappa finished his course in 2006 and came to Bangalore to practise law under senior advocate Venkatesh.

Naveena, after finishing her course in 2009, has been practising in the city under senior advocate S Prakash Shetty.

Srinivasa Reddy, Naveena’s father, ruled out any love affair between his daughter and Rajappa. “We had, in fact, found a match for my daughter,” he added.

Police have recovered a note allegedly written by Rajappa which stated that Naveena repeatedly rejected his offers of marriage. “I am committing this (murder and attempted suicide) of my own free will,” the note stated.

Case has been registered against Rajappa for murder and attempted suicide under Sections 302 and 309 of Indian Penal Code at the Vidhana Soudha police station.
