Although the high court order has ruled that private transport vehicles must install speed governors, the All India Motor Transport Congress

(AIMTC) has decided to go on strike from December 11 midnight. As a result, all private commercial vehicles may be off the roads from December 12.

AIMTC president GR Shanmugappa said the move will not achieve the desired result as only private commercial vehicles come under the ambit of the court ruling.

“BMTC and KSRTC and private commercial vehicles are not affected. If the government’s aim is to prevent accidents, then shouldn’t these vehicles too have speed governors?” he said.

A number of drivers and travel agencies are opposed to the ruling.
Shahjahan, a driver, said: “We already have speed restrictions on vehicles when it comes to driving on highways. There are different speed limits in different places. Moreover, the government has built four- and five-lane highways so that distances can be covered in a short time. Why did they do that if they are going to place a speed limit?”

Prakashan V, who owns a travel agency, said the move is impractical. “When tourists hire cabs, they hope to complete the journey in minimal time. With speed governors, it will be hard to cover long distances. It is impractical to try this in taxis or private buses. These are practical only for trucks,” he said.

Shanmugappa said installing speed governors will also pose problems for vehicles entering Karnataka and tourism could be
affected.

“Karnataka is the only state to introduce speed governors. What is the need for this,” he asked, adding: “If the intention is to reduce accidents, why can’t the same rule be applied to private vehicles?”

The strike will also affect the IT industry, which depends on private commercial vehicles. “The government can put a stop to this if it recommends that there is no need to use speed governors. We hope they will do this,” he said.
