The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed customised yoga packages to boost the health and morale of the armed forces personnel.

The yoga packages are developed by the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), one of DRDO’s life sciences laboratories, after extensive scientific studies.  According to DRDO, yoga (asana and pranayama) are beneficial for improving soldiers’ mental and physical condition under different climatic extremes.

Dr W Selvamurthy, chief controller (R&D) for life sciences and international cooperation, told DNA yoga packages are customised based on the requirement of the three armed forces.

“For the army, we have developed different packages for soldiers serving at high altitudes in Siachen area, low intensity conflict zones in the North East and Jammu and Kashmir. Soldiers in peace-time locations would be imparted different training exercises,” Dr W Selvamurthy said.

For the army personnel serving in Siachen area, exercises would focus on cold tolerance, while for those at low intensity conflict areas, they would focus on combating stress, he said. Similarly, there are different packages for air force personnel serving in high altitude areas, peace-time locations and pilots flying combat and transport aircraft.

For the navy, packages for those serving onboard warships and submarines are different. “For submariners there are space constraints; hence exercises are performed in sitting or standing posture,” he said.

Instructors from army are trained by professional yoga trainers, he added.
