Non-smokers outnumbered the smokers at a programme held in Freedom Park on Tuesday to help people quit smoking. Freedom from Tobacco, the initiative by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, was organised on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day in association with the Indian Dental Association, Indian Medical Association, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Rajarajeswari Medical College.

The event was mostly attended by women, who were concerned about their smoking sons and husbands. Many youngsters too participated in the event.

MBBS students of Rajarajeswari Medical College counselled smokers on getting rid of the fatal addiction. “I am disappointed with the smokers as I hardly found any smoker coming in and speaking to us about the ways in which they could give up smoking.

We have a special chewable toffee purely made of plants which can help smokers get rid of the temptation to smoke,” said Shanmugha Priya, a second year MBBS student of Rajarajeswari Medical College, who volunteered as a counsellor at the event.
“It is hard to believe that people still smoke even after knowing its side-effects,” said a student of Oxford College of Pharmacy, who was present at the event.

Apart from counselling, the event also had a display of paintings and cut-outs on the ill-effects of smoking.

Various other health and business institutes in the city also celebrated the World No Tobacco Day. The District Anti Tobacco Cell, Bangalore, commemorated the day at the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute with an event aimed at educating nursing students on their roles in tobacco control.

HealthCare Global Enterprises Ltd, in association with the Karnataka state police department, conducted a health camp for police personnel. The camp explained how yoga can be beneficial in quitting smoking. Participants were screened for pulmonary function test and oral cancer.

Sagar Hospitals, Kumaraswamy Layout, Banashankari organised Arogya Vahana — a mobile medical camp to conduct free lung check up for over 300 people in different parts of South Bangalore.

The Lalit Ashok observed the World No Tobacco Day to create awareness on the ill effects of smoking and smokeless tobacco among its staff. The hotel staff requested guests to avoid smoking in the hotel premises including the smoking zone.

The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) launched a multi-faceted website to create an enabling environment for tobacco control in the country. The portal is the first of its kind on tobacco control in India that comprehensively offers training, resources and research evidence with regard to tobacco control.
