“Eat well, sleep right.” This is what Bharath N Padasale, who scored a 96% in the science subjects in II PUC last year, has to tell candidates taking the II PUC examination which is beginning on Thursday.

He stresses the need for revision, “Ideally, it’s best not to cram till the last minute. There is need for revision. Also, it’s a good idea to look up question papers of the last three years or so. They help to boost confidence, if nothing else.”

Doctors also suggest that students should eat and sleep well ahead of the examinations. There is no need to skip meals, and no reason to stay up nights before the examinations.

CR Chandrashekar, a psychiatrist with National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) says, “Good food and sufficient rest are necessary to keep the mind alert. Drink a lot of water, and avoid spicy or oily foods to stay awake and alert while answering questions.”

Chandra Mouli, a PUC topper last year, said, “Just don’t get into that discussion about some ‘important questions’, and the leak in the question papers. It happens every year, and it is just a lot of hot air. It is best to avoid discussions of the question paper for about two hours before entering the examination hall. It is best to start the exam with a cool mind. Last-minute discussions, in my experience, only leave people more tense.”

And counsellors say that positive thinking can make a big difference. Just stay calm and collected, and do not fear.

“All you have in your power is to answer to the best of your ability. So do not think too far ahead and wonder about the results, they’ll come when they should,” says Dr Chandrashekar.

There’s another tip for those seeking to relax before the examination — just breathe slowly and deeply.
