It was only after the parents of a 21-year-old received an anonymous letter did they realise that their daughter was in trouble.

Parents of Kavya (name changed), a final year BCom student, and resident of Moodalapalya in Nagarbhavi, were shocked to receive a letter from a man demanding ransom, threatening to circulate obscene videos of their daughter.

Based on a complaint from the public and Kavya’s parents, Chandra Layout police arrested Mohan (35), a native of Kerala and resident of Papareddypalya in the city. Mohan said that he had come to the city 10 years ago, and set up Nisha Footware store in Moodalapalya. The incident came to light on Sunday morning when Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) activists caught him and handed him over to the police.

KRV secretary, Govindarajanagar constituency, Balaji, said that five months ago, the girl, a regular customer of the shop, was struck unconscious by the accused who sprayed a drug on her face when she visited the store to purchase footwear. “She woke up after two hours to find her clothes missing, while she was lying in the shop’s storeroom. The man then threatened to circulate an obscene video of the girl that he had taken when she was unconscious, and threatened her against informing anyone. Three months ago, he started harassing her and the family for money,’’ he said.

Mohan allegedly started making phone calls to the family and threatened to circulate the video as a multimedia messaging service (MMS). “About 20 days ago, the family received an anonymous letter, stating that the sender had 150 copies of the video, and demanded Rs1 lakh to return them. Mohan’s associates, Kumar and Ambarish, had also been threatening the girl and they even extorted a 50gm gold chain from her,” said Balaji.

On Saturday, the family contacted Balaji and the following morning, KRV activists from the Praveen Shetty faction, attacked Mohan at his store. Witnesses said that about 30-40 activists forced him out of the shop and, along with the public, assaulted him. Meanwhile, the Chandra Layout police arrived and arrested Mohan.

According to the complaint lodged by Kavya’s parents, Mohan had allegedly taken a video of the girl after spraying something on her face, and then shot a nude video of her. “The video shows a woman in the nude, with the backdrop of the shop. We are yet to verify if it is the same girl. However, the letter sent by Mohan to the parents is proof,” said B Shivakumar, DCP (West). Police have also arrested Kumar and Ambarish. Investigations revealed that Mohan had behaved in a similar fashion with  several other women in the area.

Police have acquired a copy of the video, which, according to sources, has already been circulated across the city. “We will also take the help of the cyber police to investigate the case,” said a police officer. The girl’s family and the victim were unavailable for any comment.
