Science and technical awards to be presented on April 6 in Karnataka

Karnataka’s highest scientific and technical awards, which were not handed over to scientists and engineers over the past three years, will finally be presented to them on April 6.

Announcing the list of winners for the Sir M Visvesvaraya Award for senior scientists, Dr Raja Ramanna award for scientist and engineers, Sir CV Raman award for young scientists, Prof Satish Dhawan award for young engineers, and the Dr Kalpana Chawla award for young women scientists and engineers for the years 2008 and 2009, on Friday, the chairman of the state vision group on science and technology, Prof CNR Rao, said that a high-level committee comprising eminent scientists under him selected the awardees.

The Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology had invited nominations for  state awards in 2010, and the nominations were scrutinised by the selection committee.
Rao said that the prize money for the awards have been increased by Rs25,000.

While the cash prize for Sir M Visvesvaraya Award is Rs1 lakh, Dr Raja Ramanna Award will carry a cash prize of Rs75,00. For other awards, the cash prize will be Rs50,000. In an attempt to improve the quality of science, Rao said that he would soon meet chief minister BS Yeddyurappa to seek funds.

He said that in the area of innovation, India was lagging behind, and to address this he would request the government to set up an Institute for Innovation in Chikkaballapur, which will be on the lines of Taiwan’s Institute of Innovation in Technology and Research.
