This year, ‘Challenging Star’ Darshan’s Dasara was different—he celebrated it in the Parappana Agrahara jail. Darshan, who used to be with his family and friends on each Dasara, prayed with his cellmates this year. The actor is behind the bars for allegedly assaulting his wife and child.

Unlike the other days, on Thursday, when the jail authorities went to wake up Darshan, Katta Jagadish and Itasca Srinivas at 6.30am, they found the trio was already up and about. Darshan went for a morning walk and returned to his room and preferred to give his daily cup of coffee a miss. The tainted actor, and KIADB land scam accused Katta Jagadish and Srinivas had had a bath and were ready for the puja.

By 7.30am, puja items had arrived from their respective houses. Darshan’s family had sent flowers, coconuts, fruits, incense sticks and other items. Interestingly, they didn’t need a priest as Srinivas donned the hat of a pujari with aplomb. The puja went on for more than three hours inside cell number 4, in Block D. Darshan and Katta also chanted shlokas and mantras under Srinivas’s guidance.

Gods in the cell
The pictures of lord Ganesha, Venkataramana, goddess Lakshmi and Sharada, brought by Darshan and Katta's family members, adorned the cell. Darshan is a devotee of lord Venkataramana. Even in the choice of gods, these cellmates had a consensus as Katta and Srinivas too are Venkataramana devotees.
After puja, the inmates were given avalakki (beaten rice) for breakfast. Around 11am, special food arrived for Darshan, Katta and Srinivas from their homes. They shared food with each other and had fruits in the afternoon, police said.

In the evening, payasa was served to all prisoners on the pancha's (electives) decision. The government had shelled out Rs12,000 for payasa that was made of moong daal. Each prisoner was given a serving of the sweet, which cost Rs3 per head. Along with that, raagi balls, chapati, rice and sambar too was served. Darshan and his cell mates, however, only had payasa and sent the rest of the food back as their family members had brought food for the evening.

There are nine festivals that jail authorities allow the prisoners to celebrate, Dasara being one among them.

Health condition
Darshan’s health is normal, but for the complaints of asthma. Sometimes, he has difficulty breathing and starts wheezing. He has been taking Asthalin tablet, police said. The medicines too were provided by Darshan’s family.

Bail expectation
