The Kannada film industry, which has been in mourning after it lost stars like Vishnuvardhan and KS Ashwath recently, found reason to smile on Saturday. Two Kannada movies Gubbachigalu and Vimukti and one Tulu movie Gaggara bagged  two national film awards that were announced for the year 2008. This year, the government will be holding the 56th National film award distribution ceremony.

Gubbachigalu, directed by Abhay Simha and produced by B Suresh, was adjudged with the Best Children’s film. Vimukti (meaning liberation) directed by P Sheshadri got the national award for best regional film in Kannada. With this award, Sheshadri has set a new record — he is now the first director in the country to win five national awards in the regional film category, that too for all the films he has directed.

Sheshadri began his career in the world of cinema with his film Munnudi which won a national award in 2001. This was followed by national awards for Atithti (2002), Beru (2004) and Thutturi (2007). Sheshadri has tried to explore the man-woman relationship from a new perspective in Vimukti.

“I know I cannot market my films with the limited resources I have. But I still want to release my films in theatres and want people interested to have access to them,” says Sheshadri. “Girish Kasaravalli sir is a big name and he has been backed by producers who are committed and are convinced of his ability,” he added.

Gubbachigalu is about the concrete jungle edging out the sparrow. The movie takes us through the journey of Ila and Anirudha, two children who go looking for ‘their’ missing sparrow.

President Pratibha Patil will distribute the awards to the winners at a function to be held in Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi in March.
